The Carlyle Group, and their Danish partners NordKranen, asked four architectural studios to propose a design for a new residential neighborhood in Copenhagen of roughly 200,000 sq.m, with a first phase of 38,000 sq.m. This area will be composed of four buildings and each architect will then be asked to develop one building to construction. The site is unique in that it is in between the Copenhagen harbor and the freeway that leads to the airport. Our approach focused on several key issues:
1) the use of an architectural vocabulary reminiscent of farm buildings, specifically siloes; 2) a careful modeling of massing in order to provide both the high density required and the protection of lower buildings from the shadows cast by 40m tall neighbors;
3) the creation of a focal center for this new part of town that reinforces the master plan’s vehicular and pedestrian patterns and creates a public amenity, a park, which lies at the heart of the new neighborhood and with direct access to the water’s edge
4) to propose dwelling units of the highest quality, taking full advantage of views, privacy, double height volumes and direct access to units without the use of corridors.
