Inspired by Isamu Noguchi’s light sculptures, the design purpose was to extend the concept of Akari (Japanese for “light as illumination” but also “weightlessness”) into the wearable sculpture of an Akari Scarf. The scarf’s luxurious modal-and-silk blend fabric echoes the translucent washi paper of Noguchi’s delicate lanterns, while the fine embroidery mimics the bamboo reed “ribs” of the lamps, giving the scarf form and structure. Just as Noguchi’s Akari light sculptures took on many forms, the Akari Scarf may be worn in any number of ways, remaining nearly weightless, true to Noguchi’s original concept and aesthetics.
