100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia and Czech design

International Design Festival - Czech Design Week (CZDW, which takes place from 28.11. to 2.12.2018, will move to the majestic interiors of Prague Congress Centre right in the heart of Czech capital. The annual event celebrating all forms of design work will show more than a hundred Czech and international designers, selecting the best of not only Czech glassmaking, porcelain work, jewellery, interior design, design studios, unique toys, accompanied by graphic design, industrial design and other various artworks.

Though the Prague Congress Centre, formerly known as the Palace of Culture, is seen by some as a heritage of communism, the building is already an important part of Prague’s landscape. But the building's uniqueness does not show only on the outside, its interiors include a vast number of valuable pieces of art by Czechoslovakian artists of the 20th century, such as glassmakers Stanislav Libenský, Jaroslava Brychtová, and František Procházka, painter Cyril Bouda or sculptures František Vízner.

“We’ve chosen the Congress Centre as the festival venue not only for the building’s rich interiors but also for its historical importance. The Czech Republic is celebrating the 100-year anniversary of founding our first democratic state of Czechoslovakia but for example, only a few people know that in 1989, during the Velvet Revolution, the building hosted talks about the future of the country, its upcoming democratic government and democratic elections,” added to the historical context Lukáš Pipek, director of the festival.

With the new location, the CZDW will also redesign the exhibition concept. "Designers will move from abandoned buildings, where they occupied separate rooms, to the open space," added Pipek.

All around the historic centre of Prague in twenty partnership Design Stores, the work of other artists will be shown during the festival.

But the festival will also host a vast number of designers visiting from abroad. Thanks to the partnership CZDW and Milan Design Week's Lambrate Design District around thirty Italian will arrive in Prague. "We are very happy of the partnership we have established with the Czech Design Week. We believe this is a great opportunity to give visibility to our designers. Exhibit them in a different context, out of our country, Italy, is a great chance for their promotion and the dissemination of design" said Enzo Carbone, CEO of Prodes Italia and communication manager of Lambrate Design District.

For the additional program, the Design Forum in collaboration with the non-profit and education organization Design Disco will be held on Friday 30th. Together with our counterpart Design Week Mexico, which takes place on 10-14 October in 2018's World Design Capital Mexico City, we're happy to promote the upcoming exhibition commemorating Věra Čáslavská, a strong sportswoman who influenced both Czechoslovakia and Mexico. The exhibition named Věra 68 will start on 26th October in Múseo de las Culturas, Mexico City and is prepared by the Czech Embassy in Mexico and Věra Čáslavská Foundation.
