Brompton Design District

Everythig's ready for the London Design Festival

Launched in 2006, Brompton was established as the London Design Festival’s first Design District. From the outset, it has played host to a pioneering and innovative contemporary programme that has changed the dynamic of the area and earned it a reputation as a leading London design destination. Twelve years on, the programme continues to be a seedbed for experimental design in an area of London known for its iconic, international design brands. Brompton Design District is known for its iconic, international design stores. The growing cluster of global brands and design retailers along with local cultural institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum create the foundations of a design district where new design and creativity can flourish.

Brompton’s 2018 programme, curated by Jane Withers Studio, is focused around the theme ‘Material Consequences’. Brompton will showcase design projects that rethink attitudes to materials and waste and the shift to a circular economy. A block of vacated shops and offices from 197-205 Brompton Road will become a stage for exhibitions that explore this theme, alongside exhibitions within Brompton’s design stores, showrooms and galleries.

Retailers addressing the Material Consequences theme include Skandium, who will be presenting The Eco Townhouse, Mint will showcase a material-forward TRANS-FORM exhibition, Smallbone of Devizes will host workshops to celebrate its 40th year and the district’s Material Consequences theme, while premium appliance brand Sub-Zero and Wolf will explore, discuss and understand the future of materials in the kitchen with Dr Jane Norris Associate Professor Liberal Arts at The American University at Richmond. Many of the brands in the district including B&B Italia, Boffi, Cassina, Kartell, Meridiani, Molteni&C Dada, Society Limonta and The Conran Shop create products using the best materials, which are designed to last the test of time, often being passed on to the next generations and therefore reducing waste and over-production.

Tim Butler, Managing Director of South Kensington Estates commented: “We are delighted that Jane Withers Studio has chosen to curate a series of exhibitions across the district that look to address one of the most important issues of our generation. The future of resources and the impact of producing and discarding of materials affects us all and we are delighted to be showcasing projects that look at solutions, while also offering a platform for discussion during the London Design Festival.”

Brompton Design District 2018 is set to showcase a diverse range of engaging exhibitions, installations, workshops and talks for the London Design Festival, 15 - 23 September.

In over 50 years, Cassina has brought together in its Maestri Collection authentic reissues of iconic designs by the greatest 20th Century architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Gerrit T. Rietveld, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, working in close collaboration with the authors’ heirs and official foundations.

When the light is dimmer, the house takes on peaceful tones, when it is cold outside the spaces are warmed with soft wool. Three colours, deep and essential, feature in the collection: a strong plum, an intense neptune blue and the tone of raw clay, a new stand-out natural.
