Annual Citywide Celebration Returns June 7 to June 10

The LA Design Festival is an inclusive and interdisciplinary celebration that occurs annually each summer. The Festival’s eighth edition will take place June 7 to June 10, 2018 featuring 40+ events at ROW DTLA and throughout the City at various locations. Events range from conversations and workshops to studio tours, design shows, exhibitions, installations, and parties. The LA Design Festival is reflective of the immense creative diversity and talent in LA. “Design is for Everyone” is the overarching theme that informs the program this year, celebrating LA’s rich culture of creative freedom and collaboration.

LA Design Festival Announces 2018 ICON, EDGE, and RISE Awards Recipients The 2018 ICON Award recognizing a singular woman for her outstanding contributions to her industry, her city, and society at-large goes to two-time Oscar nominated costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who has worked on over 40 films during her 30 year career ranging from historical epics like Amistad and Malcolm X to contemporary comic book classics, like Black Panther. The 2018 EDGE Awards recognize recently emerged talent. This year, the 2018 recipients are Poketo (Ted Vadakan and Angie Myung), Get It Girl Collective (Amelia Giller, Audrey Lee, Xoana Herrera, Kaitlin Mahoney), Wrkshp (Airi Isoda, Ryan Upton), and Sing Sing Studio (Adi Goodrich and Sean Pecknold). LA Design Festival launches the RISE Award in 2018, recognizing outstanding student, graduate, and postgraduate work. The inaugural RISE Award goes to Southern California Institute of Architecture Masters of Architecture student Andrea Cadioli. LA Design Festival Board Members evaluate and select the awards recipients from a shortlist of candidates nominated by the public, faculty, and design influencers through a public online nomination process.

LA Design Festival takes up residency at ROW DTLA, taking over storefronts and streets to create four days of design adventures, workshops, talks, and experiences. Independent design show INTRO LA also returns to the LA Design Festival for the fourth year in a row, showcasing designers such as Bari Ziperstein, Estudio Persona, Waka Waka, Klein Agency, and Resident, among others. LA Design Festival takes over Market Row with installations and lounges by All We Ever Wanted, Assembledge+, Eric Junker, Muji, and Tidelli and among others.

Design is for Everyone is a special exhibition featuring new and original works by Knotwork LA, Pretty in Plastic, Wolfum, and Concrete Geometric, celebrating the creative freedom and spirit of collaboration found only in LA. In recognition of their membership in World Design Weeks, the LA Design Festival will feature a World Design Gallery that showcases work by designers from around the world, including City EastWest (a special exhibition curated by the College of Art and Creative Enterprises in Dubai), SOS Save Our Souls by Barcelona-based 17-year old artist Achilles Souras, ceramics by Greek designer Faye Tsakalides and a new piece by Venezuelan, Barcelona-based textile designer Mariadela Araujo.

LA Design Festival will also feature film screenings, including the West Coast premiere of ELEVATIONS, dezeen’s first-ever drone documentary, as well as Color In Sight, a documentary on the details of color in sight created by Tea Leaves.

LA Design Festival continues throughout the city, with events varying from studio tours to design crawls. Studio and project tours will take place throughout the city with CannonDesign, Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney (EYRC), MASHstudios, Rios Clementi Hale Studios (RCHS), and Shimoda Design Group. Spatial Affairs Bureau hosts three separate events including: a studio tour with Feral Office, a rare tour of TBWA\CHIAT\DAY, and a Venice Bungalow Home Tour. Design Celebrations will take place all over LA, including: Design Night hosted by whoreHaus Studios, Dr. Knudson, Neptune Glassworks, Fathom Form, and Londubh Studio; designer Eric Trine’s Long Beach Design Showcase hosted at Amigo Modern; an afternoon Patio Party with Brendan Ravenhill; a special reception with Croft House; ending the weekend with Gel Lab Residency at The ACE Hotel. The Dutch artists behind the Chromatic Dinner bring their neo-futuristic multi-sensory pop-up dinner series to SCI-arc, partnering with Impossible Foods and Imperfect Produce for three tasty evenings.
